Coastal imbalance: generation of oceanic Kelvin waves by atmospheric perturbations

نویسندگان

چکیده

The response of a semi-infinite ocean to slowly travelling atmospheric perturbation crossing the coast provides simple example breakdown nearly geostrophic balance induced by boundary. We examine this in linear shallow-water model at small Rossby number $\varepsilon \ll 1$. Using matched asymptotics we show that long Kelvin wave, with $O(\varepsilon^{-1})$ length scale and $O(\varepsilon)$ amplitude relative quasigeostrophic response, is generated as crosses coast. Accounting for wave restores conservation mass which violated approximation.

Numerical Simulation of Internal Kelvin Waves and Coastal Upwelling Fronts*

Two three-dimensional primitive equation numerical ocean models are applied to the problem of internal Kelvin waves and coastal upwelling in the Great Lakes. One is the Princeton Ocean Model (POM) with a terrain-following (sigma) vertical coordinate, and the other is the Dietrich/Center for Air Sea Technology (DIECAST) model with constant z-level coordinates. The sigma coordinate system is part...

Oceanic and Atmospheric Anomalies of Tropical Instability Waves

Tropical instability waves (TIWs) are detected in remotely-sensed sea surface height (SSH), temperature (SST), and wind records of the eastern equatorial Pacific. Analyses of TIW anomaly relationships reveal strong dynamical influence of TIWs within approximately 5 of the equator. The first influence is advective heat flux. The primary forcing of TIW SST anomalies is advection of the meridional...

Influence of Oceanic Intraseasonal Kelvin Waves on Eastern Pacific Hurricane Activity

Recent studies have highlighted the role of subsurface ocean dynamics in modulating eastern Pacific (EPac) hurricane activity on interannual time scales. In particular, the well-known El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) recharge–discharge mechanism has been suggested to provide a good understanding of the year-to-year variability of hurricane activity in this region. This paper investigates the...

Oceanic rafting by a coastal community.

Oceanic rafting is thought to play a fundamental role in assembling the biological communities of isolated coastal ecosystems. Direct observations of this key ecological and evolutionary process are, however, critically lacking. The importance of macroalgal rafting as a dispersal mechanism has remained uncertain, largely owing to lack of knowledge about the capacity of fauna to survive long voy...
